Point Test & Invitation
You must lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) and be invited to apply for this visa
You must score a minimum of 65 points to be invited to apply, however, invitations are often issued to applicants with more than 65 points.
The most recent invitation round outlines the point scores which attracted invitations. There are also some occupations that require more than 65 points to be considered.
You must meet the points score eligibility at the time you are invited to apply for the visa.
Points Table
Including Family
189 visa applicants may be able to include family members in their application:
Dependent children or step-children
To be eligible, a child must be your child or a stepchild from a current or previous relationship. The child should not be married, engaged to be married, or have a de facto partner and must be under 18 years of age or over (only if not yet turned 23 and dependent on you or your partner). For instance, if the child is over 23 years of age, it should be argued that the child is unable to earn a living to support themselves due to physical or cognitive limitations and be dependent on you or your partner. The key thing to note is that the child will still need to meet Australia’s health requirements.
Partner’s dependent child or children
Partner (spouse or de facto partner and can be the same sex)
Partner applicants must prove that the relationship is: genuine and continuing, the partner is at least 18 years of age when the application is lodged, not related by family if in a de facto relationship, must have a mutual commitment to a shared life to the exclusion of others, lived together or do not live separately on a permanent basis.
How it Works
Step 1: Check if your occupation is on the Skilled Occupation lists. This visa is only available for those who can fill a position on the department's list. We can assist in selecting the best occupation to suit your background and help you determine ways on how you can meet the eligibility requirements.
Step 2: Complete a skills assessment. Applicants should have a valid positive skills assessment from the relevant skills assessing body. The department would only accept skills assessment issued by the right authority. Positive skills assessment becomes invalid after three years but can be renewed.
Step 3: Calculate your points. Your score must be 65 points and above to become eligible. Please refer to the points table above.
Step 4: Submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect. This program will ask you a number of questions related to your background, skills, and relevant work history. Your EOI will be seen by the Australian authorities as well as available to Australian employers who may be looking for someone of your skill-set to hire.
Step 5: Obtain a nomination before you can apply for the visa. Upon receiving an invitation to apply for this visa, you have 60 days to submit your application.
Step 6: We will then lodge your visa and liaise with the department until the decision is made. It can take several months for the DoHA to make a decision on your visa application.
Step 7: Final step, you and your dependents if necessary can then come to Australia after receiving your visa approval.
Common Mistakes
Incorrect and/or incomplete documents
Accuracy and consistency are empirical when it comes to document submission for any visa application. Misspelled and or incomplete documents won’t be a good thing for you.
Not using a migration professional
While you can apply for a Subclass 189 on your own, it may cost you a lot more if you’re unsure how to progress on your application. The actual process of visa application requires proper research on the immigration law and assessment of your circumstances.
