Basic Eligibility

State Nomination

Applicants must be nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency before applying for the 190 visa.

If you are nominated by a state or territory, the Department of Home Affairs will invite you to apply for the visa.

Each state and territory government agency has its own eligibility criteria.

How It Works

Step 1: Nominated Occupation

  • Choose an eligible occupation relevant to your qualifications and experience – Occupation should be on the 190-visa occupation list

Step 2: Complete skills assessment

  • Get your skills assessed by a relevant assessing authority listed on your eligible occupation

  • Secure your skills assessment within 3 years before the date of the invitation

Step 3: Submit an EOI (Expression of Interest)

  • Submit an EOI through SkillSelect

  • You must be able to obtain at least 65 points

  • The claims you make in your EOI must be proven (gather all supporting documents)

Step 4: State Nomination

  • Each state has its own requirements. Applicants must meet each requirement to receive an invitation.

  • You will receive an invitation if you have enough points and there are places available for your occupation

  • You could receive an invitation up to 2 years after submitting an EOI

Step 5: Visa Application

  • You can be in or outside Australia when you apply

  • You only have 60 days from the date of invitation to apply for the visa
