Advantages Compared to Other Visas for Parents

Visa holders can stay in Australia throughout the period of visa validity unlike 18-month, 3-year, or 5-year Subclass 600 Tourist visa granted to parents with condition 8558 which restricts parents staying in Australia for more than 12 months in total in any 18-month period.
Disadvantages Compared to Other Visas for Parents
Applicant must be outside Australia to apply for this Subclass 870 visa unless the applicant obtained "Permission to Apply in Australia";
Two-step processes which require sponsorship application to be approved before visa application can be lodged;
Temporary visa with no work rights (exemption may apply in limited circumstances);
To be granted a further Subclass 870 visa, the applicant must have been outside Australia for 90 consecutive days;
How it works
Step 1: Before you apply
Before you apply, check if you are eligible. Check that you have an approved Parent Sponsor. You can't apply for or be granted this visa if you do not have an approved Parent Sponsor.
You must have a valid passport. We will only grant the visa if you have a valid passport.
Step 2: Gather your documents
You will need to provide identity, character and other documents for evidence that you meet the criteria for this visa.
The Department will tell your approved Parent Sponsor if you have Permission to Apply in Australia (but not in immigration clearance) if we approve their sponsorship.
Step 3: Apply for the visa
Apply from outside Australia within 6 months of Sponsorship approval
If applying from in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, you must have Permission to Apply in Australia.
If you have Permission to Apply in Australia, you must apply within 60 days of sponsorship approval. If you do not apply within 60 days, your approved Parent Sponsor may apply again for Permission to Apply in Australia, if the sponsorship is valid. If we do not approve the Permission to Apply in Australia request, you will have to lodge your visa application outside Australia within 6 months of sponsorship approval, or make an application for a different kind of visa to remain in Australia.
Step 4: After you apply
Department will inform you once they receive the application.
While waiting for the visa to be granted, you need to inform the department if there is any information that needs to be updated or if there are any changes in your circumstances.
NOTE: You cannot apply for a permanent or temporary parent visa when you have applied for or hold this visa.
Step 5: Visa Outcome
You can be in or outside Australia when the department decides your visa application. They will let you know the decision in writing.
