From India to the UK and Indonesia: How Recent Migration Changes Open Doors for Skilled Migrants in Australia

Highlights

There are plenty of recent migration changes which will open more work opportunities for skilled migrants from India, the UK, and Indonesia this Financial Year 2023-2024.

New partnership between India and Australia

Both India and Australia have good ties with each other, making India one of the top trading partners of Australia. Such a good partnership opens up more doors of opportunity for Indian nationals. The first door of opportunity opened last 1 July 2023. Indian graduates of tertiary institutions in Australia are already eligible to work for up to 8 years in the country. This work engagement does not need any visa sponsorship.

This new work engagement for student visa holders in Australia is a remarkable opportunity. It is important to note that an average tertiary degree holder is only eligible to stay in the country for at least 2 years. If a student visa holder is eligible for post-study work rights, they can stay up to 4 years. But with this new policy, Indian graduates can stay longer in the country with the 8 years stay ruling. This new policy will gain them more work experience that will eventually help them in their permanent residency application.

Another remarkable opportunity for Indian nationals is the implementation of MATES. Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme will offer an annual cap of 3,000 spots for 4 years. These spots will be given to Indian high-skilled professionals in these industries:

  • Engineering,

  • Information and communication technology,

  • Artificial intelligence,

  • Financial technology,

  • Renewable energy,

  • and Mining.

The extended opportunity for UK passport holders

Australia extended the opportunities for UK passport holders. Before, the work and holiday visa only allowed applicants ages 18-30 years old. But now, the new criteria allow applicants ages 18-35 years old. The second great opportunity will commence this coming 1 July 2024. By that time, UK passport holders can be eligible to apply for a second or third work and holiday visa without complying with the specified work requirements. This requirement exemption will give UK passport holders a wide range of job options and opportunities. Currently, work and holiday visa applicants who are already on their second or third visa application need to comply with a specific work requirement.

Currently, work and holiday visa applicants who are already on their second or third visa application need to comply with a specific work requirement. For second work and holiday visa applicants, they need to work for at least 88 days in a regional area under these specific jobs:

  • Mining

  • Fruit picking

  • Construction

  • Fishing

  • Tourism and hospitality work

For the third work and holiday applicants, the visa applicant must work for at least 6 months in a regional area under the same specific jobs.

The exemption of work requirements can streamline visa applications as well as create more opportunities for UK passport holders.

New perks for Indonesians traveling to Australia

The Australian government has announced the new perks that Indonesians could enjoy as they travel to Australia. These perks involve access to extended business visa and frequent traveler visa.

How will this affect Indonesian travelers?

First, the extended business visa will give Indonesians access to conduct business-related activities in Australia. This visa access is extended from 3 years to 5 years making it more flexible for Indonesian nationals to have business engagement. Second, the access to frequent traveler visa. With this visa, Indonesians can now be eligible to stay up to 3 months each time they enter Australia. This visa can be granted or will last for up to 10 years. This new visa opportunity will enable Indonesians to visit family members, be in the country as a tourist for a cruise or a holiday, or even undertake business visitor activities.

Australia is constantly adapting to the demands of its labor market, making its doors wide open for migrants. With these changes, Migration to Australia has never been this easy.
