Qualifications for the 485 visa extension and Tasmania's 2023-24 Skilled Migration Program

To tackle the persistent shortage of skilled workers in Australia, graduates in high-demand fields will be granted extended post-study work rights. This extension will apply to all individuals holding a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa, who complete their studies in a specific field on or after 1 July 2023.

Qualifications for the 2 year extension

The extension of post-study work rights will apply to all individuals who possess a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa and have completed their studies in a specific field on or after 1 July 2023. Aside from completing their studies, applicants for the extended post-study work rights must also complete these additional qualifications:

  • Meet all the eligibility criteria for the Post-Study Work stream of the Temporary Graduate visa

  • Occupation must be on the list of eligible occupations released by the Department of Home Affairs (note: the list is flexible and subject to changes)

  • Hold a valid Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) on 1 July 2023, or apply for a Temporary Graduate visa before or after 1 July 2023

How does this extension affect higher education graduates

The extension of post-study work rights will be applicable to all individuals who possess a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa and have completed their studies in a specific field on or after 1 July 2023. This will increase the number of years that international graduates can stay and work legitimately in Australia. Here are the following changes per category:

  • From two years to four years for select bachelor’s degrees

  • From three years to five years for select master’s degrees

  • From four years to six years for all doctoral qualifications.

New features of Tasmania's 2023-24 Skilled Migration Program

  • Extending eligibility for subclass 190 nomination

    In case simpler criteria are available for another occupation, applicants may have the option to pull back their current application and apply for another job.

  • Changes to income thresholds

    There will be an increase in the income threshold based on the updates of the average earning in Australia. The income threshold increased from $53,900 to $70,000 last 1 July 2023

  • Service fee increase

    The service fee to apply for nomination has increased to $330 (including GST). There is no charge to submit a Registration of Interest.
