Current Changes on the SC 482 Visa

The 482 visa is a Temporary Visa program that grants skilled migrants entry into Australia and engage in their designated occupation under an approved sponsor for a duration of up to four years.  Over the past few months, this visa program has undergone numerous changes that certainly affect the application process.

Recently implemented changes

  • There are no longer limitations on the number of short-term 482 visas that can be applied for while in Australia

  • Employers are now exempt from the obligation to advertise on the Workforce Australia website to fulfill LMT requirements for TSS 482 visa sponsorships. This change aims to streamline the procedure and alleviate the administrative workload.

By the last quarter of the year 2024

The new Skills in Demand visa is set to replace the Temporary Skill Shortage 482 visa. This new visa program has three streams, a 4-year stay duration on each stream, and a direct pathway to Permanent Residency.

  • Specialist Skills Pathway: Targeting high-earning professionals with salaries exceeding $135,000, this pathway promises expedited processing within seven days. Almost all occupations will be eligible, with an annual cap of 3,000 places.

  • Core Skills Pathway: Designed for individuals earning between $70,000 and $135,000, this stream will focus on occupations listed on the new Core Skills Occupation List. Processing is aimed to be completed within 21 days, encompassing trade workers and similar professions.

  • Essential Skills Pathway: Tailored for aged- and disability-care workers earning under $70,000, this pathway emphasizes a 21-day processing timeframe to meet critical workforce demands.

Permanent Residency Pathway

Department of Home Affairs has officially declared the pathway for all Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa holders, subclass 482, to attain permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa, specifically through the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream.

This signifies that irrespective of whether TSS visa holders are sponsored in occupations listed on the Short-term (STSOL), Long-term (MLTSSL), or Regional Occupation List (ROL), they will have an accessible route to obtain permanent residency.

How to change employers on a 482 visa?

You can change employers on a 482 visa, but certain procedures and conditions must be fulfilled:

  • You should be nominated by a new employer

The new employer must lodge a nomination application with the Australian Department of Home Affairs. This process is crucial as it ensures that the new employment aligns with the visa conditions.

  • Your new nomination should be approved
