The Cook and Albanese Labor Governments have announced a groundbreaking agreement to tackle Western Australia's labor shortages and stimulate residential construction. This deal, which secures 10,000 skilled migration places for the 2024-25 period, is set to bolster the state’s workforce and address critical skill gaps across various industries.

Boosting Western Australia’s Workforce

Allocation of 10,000 Migration Places in Western Australia

The 10,000 skilled migration places are strategically divided between the State Nominated Migration Program (SNMP) and the newly established WA Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA). The allocation under the SNMP has been significantly increased from 2,350 to 5,000 places, highlighting the state’s commitment to attracting skilled workers.

Economic and Social Impact

This agreement signals Western Australia's openness to international skilled workers, enhancing the state's economy by addressing critical skill shortages and boosting the construction workforce. By attracting skilled migrants, WA can ensure its continued economic growth and build more homes for its residents, maintaining its position as a thriving and dynamic region.

Key Features of the Skills in Demand Visa

The Skills in Demand visa offers a four-year temporary skills worker visa, structured to streamline the process for both applicants and employers. It focuses on three main pathways:

  • Specialist Skills: This pathway is designed to expedite applications from high-earning professionals with expertise in critical areas such as technology and green energy industries.

  • Core Skills: Targeting areas with persistent shortages, this pathway simplifies the application process and ensures the occupation list is regularly updated to reflect current market needs.

  • Essential Skills: Aimed at lower-paid workers in vital sectors like aged care, this pathway addresses the urgent need for workers in these critical areas.

Introduction of the National Innovation Visa

Alongside the Skills in Demand visa, Australia plans to introduce the National Innovation visa. Although detailed information is yet to be released, this visa aims to attract top-tier researchers and investors, merging and replacing the existing Global Talent visa (subclass 858) and the Business Innovation and Investment Program (BIIP). This initiative is part of Australia’s strategy to foster innovation and economic growth by bringing in high-performing talent from around the world.
