887 Visa Skilled Regional

Overview

The 887 visa is a permanent visa for people who have lived and worked in specified areas of regional Australia. ​The permanent Skilled Regional visa (Subclass 887) allows provisional Skilled Regional visa holders (such as Subclass 489 visa) who have lived and worked in a specified regional area of Australia to apply for Permanent Residency.

Benefits

This is a permanent visa. It lets you:

  • Stay in Australia indefinitely

  • Work and study in Australia (without restriction)

  • Enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses

  • Sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence

  • Travel to and from Australia for five years

  • Apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible. 

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for a permanent Skilled Regional visa (Subclass 887), you must: 

  • Be inside Australia at the time of lodging your visa

  • At the time of lodgement hold a prerequisite visa  

  • Have, prior to lodgement, held a qualifying visa for at least two (2) years 

    • A skilled regional visa- subclass 489

    • A skilled independent regional-subclass 495

    • A skilled designated area sponsored visa- subclass 496

    • A skilled regional sponsored visa- subclass 475

    • A skilled regional sponsored visa- subclass 487

    • A bridging visa A/B

  • Have lived in a specified regional area for at least two (2) years

  • Have worked full-time in a specified regional area for at least one (1) year

  • Meet relevant health and character requirements.

Note: Dependents and partners who hold a skilled visa and meet all other eligibility criteria can apply for this subclass 887 visa as the main applicant.

COVID Concession

If You Are Outside of Australia

During the concession period, you are allowed to make an application outside of Australia and be out of the country when your visa is granted. In addition to this, you meet the work and residence requirements for a shorter period of time:

  • You have evidence that you worked full-time for nine months (or less if allowed) in a specified region in Australia.

  • You lived in Australia for 18 months or less in a specified region in Australia.

If You Are In Australia

If you want to apply for an 887 visa during the concession period while you are in Australia, then you must provide evidence that:

  • You worked full time for 9 months in a specific area in Australia.

  • You lived for 2 years in a specific area in Australia.

Process

Step 1: Prepare all the necessary documents, such as identity documents, work and residence documents, competent English documents character documents, relationship documents, partner documents, Skills Assessment documents

Step 2: Lodge Visa Application online

Step 3: Update the Department when there are changes especially important information such as phone number, email, address, or passport

Step 4: Applicants will be informed by writing from the Department about the visa outcome. If the application has been refused, information such as the reason why it was refused and if there’s a chance for a review of the decision will be included in the letter.

Processing times

75% of applications: 18 months
90% of applications: 19 months

Note: The Department is currently assessing applications submitted before September 2020.
