186 Visa Employer Nomination Scheme (Permanent)

Visa Overview

The 186 visa lets skilled workers, who are nominated by their employer, live and work in Australia permanently.

The 186 visa has 3 streams:

  • 186 Direct Entry Stream

    • have an occupation that is on the 186 visa occupation list

    • have at least 3 years relevant work experience, unless you are exempt

    • have a positive skills assessment, unless you are exempt

  • 186 Temporary Residence Transition Stream

    • hold a subclass 457, TSS 482 visa or related Bridging visa A, B or C

    • usually, have worked for your employer for at least 3 years full time while holding a subclass 457 or TSS 482 visa

    • have been nominated by an Australian employer whose nomination was approved in the 6 months before you apply

  • 186 Labour Agreement Stream

    • currently work, or will work, for your nominating employer who is a party to a labour agreement.

Eligibility

186 DE (Direct Entry) Stream

  • Have an eligible Occupation

  • Have 3 years relevant full-time work experience

  • Have a positive skills assessment

  • Have competent English

  • Must be under 45 years old

    • certain exemptions apply

  • Be nominated by an Australian employer. Visa must be applied within 6 months of the nomination being approved

  • Meet health and character requirements

186 TRT (Temporary Residence Transition) Stream

  • Have the required skills

  • Licensing, registration, or membership

  • Have competent English

  • Must be under 45 years old 

    • certain exemptions apply

    • If you held (or had applied for and were later granted) a subclass 457 visa on 18 April 2017, you can still apply for this visa if you are under 50 when you apply.

  • Must have this visa: 457, 482, BVA, BVB, BVC

  • Be nominated by the employer who sponsored your temporary work visa

  • Have relevant work experience

    • Your employer must have sponsored you to work full-time on your subclass 457 or subclass 482 visa for at least 3 of the 4 years prior to nominating you for the subclass 186 visa.

    • If you held (or had applied for and were later granted) a subclass 457 visa on 18 April 2017, your employer must have sponsored you to work full-time for at least 2 of the 3 years prior to nominating you for this visa.

  • Meet health and character requirements

186 LA (Labour Agreement) Stream

  • Be working under a labour agreement

  • Licensing, registration or membership

  • Be nominated

  • Unless the labour agreement provides otherwise, you must be aged under 45 years when you apply.

  • If you are in Australia, you must hold a substantive 457 or TSS 482 visa issued under a labour agreement.

How it works 

Step 1: Prepare all the necessary documents, such as Identity documents, evidence on experience, employer’s documentation for nomination and sponsorship. 

Step 2: Organise English examination and skills assessment (if required)

Step 3: Lodge the nomination 

Step 4: Lodge Visa Application (once applicant obtained skills assessment)

Step 5: Update the Department when there are changes especially important information such as phone number, email, address or passport

Step 6: Applicants will be informed by writing from the Department about the visa outcome.  

Processing Time:

  • 186 DE  - Processing time: 5-7 months

  • 186 TRT  - Processing time: 16-20 months

  • 186 LA  - Processing time: 7-11 months

Costs

The application charge for the main applicant for a 186 visa is $4115.

You might have to pay other costs, such as health assessments, police certificates, or any other certificates or tests. You are responsible for making the necessary arrangements.
