Visa Overview
The 186 visa lets skilled workers, who are nominated by their employer, live and work in Australia permanently.
The 186 visa has 3 streams:
186 Direct Entry Stream
have an occupation that is on the 186 visa occupation list
have at least 3 years relevant work experience, unless you are exempt
have a positive skills assessment, unless you are exempt
186 Temporary Residence Transition Stream
hold a subclass 457, TSS 482 visa or related Bridging visa A, B or C
usually, have worked for your employer for at least 3 years full time while holding a subclass 457 or TSS 482 visa
have been nominated by an Australian employer whose nomination was approved in the 6 months before you apply
186 Labour Agreement Stream
currently work, or will work, for your nominating employer who is a party to a labour agreement.

Have the required skills

If you held (or had applied for and were later granted) a subclass 457 visa on 18 April 2017, you can still apply for this visa if you are under 50 when you apply.
Must have this visa: 457, 482, BVA, BVB, BVC
Be nominated by the employer who sponsored your temporary work visa
Have relevant work experience
Your employer must have sponsored you to work full-time on your subclass 457 or subclass 482 visa for at least 3 of the 4 years prior to nominating you for the subclass 186 visa.
If you held (or had applied for and were later granted) a subclass 457 visa on 18 April 2017, your employer must have sponsored you to work full-time for at least 2 of the 3 years prior to nominating you for this visa.

186 LA (Labour Agreement) Stream
Be working under a labour agreement
Licensing, registration or membership
Be nominated
Unless the labour agreement provides otherwise, you must be aged under 45 years when you apply.
If you are in Australia, you must hold a substantive 457 or TSS 482 visa issued under a labour agreement.
How it works
Step 1: Prepare all the necessary documents, such as Identity documents, evidence on experience, employer’s documentation for nomination and sponsorship.
Step 2: Organise English examination and skills assessment (if required)
Step 3: Lodge the nomination
Step 4: Lodge Visa Application (once applicant obtained skills assessment)
Step 5: Update the Department when there are changes especially important information such as phone number, email, address or passport
Step 6: Applicants will be informed by writing from the Department about the visa outcome.
Processing Time:
186 DE - Processing time: 5-7 months
186 TRT - Processing time: 16-20 months
186 LA - Processing time: 7-11 months

The application charge for the main applicant for a 186 visa is $4115.
You might have to pay other costs, such as health assessments, police certificates, or any other certificates or tests. You are responsible for making the necessary arrangements.
