Important details about Australia's extended post-study work rights

Highlights

Starting on July 1st, 2023, international graduates with eligible qualifications will be given an additional two-year extension to their post-study work rights. Only those international graduates who have completed select degrees in areas where there is a verified shortage of skilled workers are eligible for an extension.

Effects of the 2 years extension

The extension of post-study work rights will be applicable to all individuals who possess a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa and have completed their studies in a specific field on or after 1 July 2023.

The two years extension will increase the number of years that international graduates can stay and work legitimately in Australia. Here are the following changes per category:

  • From two years to four years for select bachelor’s degrees

  • From three years to five years for select master’s degrees

  • From four years to six years for all doctoral qualifications.

List of occupations eligible for the extension

The extension of post-study work rights will be available to international graduates across 400 chosen disciplines. This means that Temporary Graduate visa holders should check if their disciplines are eligible for the extended post-study work visa before they could apply for the extension.

Here is a list of some eligible occupations:

  • Medical professionals

  • Psychologist

  • Optometrist

  • Pharmacist

  • Teacher

  • Engineer

  • Meet all the eligibility criteria for the Post-Study Work stream of the Temporary Graduate visa

  • Occupation must be on the list of eligible occupations released by the Department of Home Affairs (note: the list is flexible and subject to changes)

  • Hold a valid Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) on 1 July 2023, or apply for a Temporary Graduate visa before or after 1 July 2023
