GSM points test system set for overhaul

Highlights

The points test system for potential migrants seeking skilled visas to Australia is scheduled to undergo its first significant update in over ten years as part of a broader reform of the country's immigration system.

Points test system overhaul

The federal government has indicated its intention to revise the points-based assessment for skilled migrants, which dictates eligibility for entry into Australia, following a decision to decrease overall immigration levels.

In a report released in December evaluating Australia's migration system, recommendations were made to refine the points test criteria. Here are the key elements you need to remember:

  • The new points test system will prioritize traits linked with migrants who excel in securing skilled employment.

  • The new points test system will offer clearer guidelines and assurances for prospective migrants

  • Lastly, it aims to direct attention toward sectors facing skill shortages and acknowledge the potential of younger individuals.

In short, the new points test system will mainly revolve around the skills, sector of employment, and age of the applicant.

Migration intake will be cut into half next financial year

The goal of the Albanese administration is to decrease Net Overseas Migration from 510,000 in the fiscal year 2022-23 to 375,000 in 2023-24, and subsequently to 250,000 in 2024-25. This level of migration intake will concur with Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil’s goal of building a smaller, better planned, more strategic migration system that works for Australia.

Why should you apply now?

The low migration intake will affect the competition level of migrants. The lesser the supply, the higher the demand, and the more competitive it will be. It will still be possible to have a successful visa application, but it will be tremendously difficult. Thus, if you’re aspiring to apply for a permanent or temporary Australian visa, now is the best time to do it.
