Changes to the Temporary Graduate Visa program this coming July 1, 2024

Highlights:

Embarking on a journey to reshape its Migration Strategy, the Australian government unveils a series of anticipated alterations to the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa program. Set to commence on July 1, 2024, the Department of Home Affairs solidifies the impending changes, marking a significant transition to the country’s visa landscape.

Graduate Work Stream changes

As a starter, the Graduate Work stream will be renamed to the Post-Vocational Education Work stream. Aside from the name change, some qualifications are also changed.

  • The maximum age for this stream will be reduced to 35 years of age or under at the time of application

  • Hong Kong and British National Overseas (BNO) passport holders will continue to be eligible for this stream up until 50 years of age at the time of application

  • Applicants of this stream (which will eventually be called ‘Post-Vocational Education Work’ stream) must hold an associate degree, diploma, or trade qualification closely related to an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)

  • Applicants who have completed a degree level qualification or above can no longer apply in this stream and must apply through the Post-Study Work Stream (which will eventually be called the Post-Higher Education Work stream).

  • Eligible applicants who are granted this visa will be granted a visa for 18 months except Hong Kong or British National Overseas (BNO) passport holders who will be granted a visa for 5 years

Post-Study Work Stream changes

The Post-Study Work stream is set to undergo a name change to the Post-Higher Education Work stream. Here are other changes you need to remember:

  • The maximum age for this stream will be reduced to 35 years of age or under at the time of application

  • Hong Kong and British National Overseas (BNO) passport holders will continue to be eligible for this stream up until 50 years of age at the time of application.

  • Visa grant periods changes:

Stay period for new applicants this 1 July 2024

Stay period for Indian nationals

Changes in the Second Post-Study Work Stream and Replacement Stream

  • Second Post-Study Work Stream

This stream is for first-time Temporary Graduate Visa holders within the post-study work stream, who obtained a degree from an Australian university and resided in a designated regional area for two years.

Although the Second Post-Study Work stream is set to be renamed the 'Second Post-Higher Education Work' stream, there are no further changes will be made and the requirements will stay as they currently are.

  • Replacement Stream

The Replacement Stream, utilized for students affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated constraints, will conclude on July 1, 2024.
