Australia's recent visa developments and opportunities.

Highlights

In a bid to bolster international opportunities and facilitate smoother transitions for various visa categories, recent updates in visa policies have brought forth significant changes.

8 years validity of post-study work visa for Indian graduates

Indian graduates of Australian tertiary institutions on a student visa can now seek employment and engage in professional growth for a maximum duration of eight years without the need for visa sponsorship, as per the revised program. In addition, a fresh initiative called MATES (Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme) will be incorporated into the program, with a yearly limit of 3,000 spots over four years. MATES aims to establish a novel pathway for Indian graduates and early career professionals who possess expertise and competence in specific fields of study, granting them the opportunity to reside and seek employment in Australia for a maximum period of two years.

Streamlined recruitment process for elderly care workers

The Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement streamlines the process of sponsoring international workers in direct care roles, including positions such as Nursing Support Workers, Personal Care Assistants, and Aged or Disabled Carers. This agreement also allows employers to sponsor overseas workers for permanent residency under the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa program, provided that the individuals have a minimum of two years of relevant full-time work experience in Australia.

Working Holiday visa for UK passport holders

At present, individuals from the UK who are applying for Working Holiday (subclass 417) visas are required to be between the ages of 18 and 30, inclusively. But effective July 1, 2023, the upper age limit will be extended to 35 years. Starting from this date, UK passport holders can apply for any Working Holiday (subclass 417) visa until midnight (Australian Eastern Standard Time) on the day preceding their 36th birthday.

To qualify for a second or third Working Holiday visa, applicants must demonstrate a minimum of three or six months of 'specified work'. However, starting from July 1, 2024, UK passport holders will be exempt from this requirement when applying for a second or third Working Holiday visa on or after that date.
