Due to an anticipated increase in demand, the need for full-time care workers in Australia is expected to double by 2050, resulting in a shortage of over 200,000 workers. With this exponential skills shortage, the state of Victoria provided assistance and compensation to students studying to work in the healthcare industry.
Massive recruitment and free university education for thousands of nurses and midwives
Under a comprehensive recruitment and training scheme, more than 17,000 nurses and midwives will be recruited and provided with educational prospects this year 2023.
In addition, the state of Victoria is offering free university education and specialized training to thousands of nursing and midwifery students. As per the state’s announcement, over 10,000 nursing and midwifery program graduates will have their entire HECS debt waived.
The state’s students support scheme is designed to help people get a job in the Victorian health services upon graduation. Domestic students will receive a total of $9,000 for their three years of education, with the remaining balance of $7,500 due after working in Victorian public health services for a minimum period of two years.

The main goal of the new program is for the health system to receive a boost and an army of health professionals that will provide care for Victorians. Here are other benefits that healthcare workers and students could enjoy:
$11,000 scholarships for enrolled nurses to become registered nurses, covering course costs and boosting the number of registered nurses
$12,000 scholarships to support the training and employment of 100 new Nurse Practitioners in both acute and community settings
$10,000 worth of scholarships to study intensive care, emergency, pediatrics, and cancer care for postgraduate nurses
A $20 million budget is given to assist college graduates and postgraduates in making the transition to careers in the healthcare industry
Visa options for nurses and midwives who wish to migrate to Australia
Registered nurses and midwives are included in both the Medium & Long Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and the Short Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) which provides them access to various Australian immigration visa programs.
