Tasmania State Nomination Criteria

Tasmania has announced its 2024-2025 skilled visa nomination program, featuring a significantly increased allocation of places. With 2,860 skilled visa nomination spots—more than double the previous year’s allocation—there are now greater opportunities for skilled workers.

  • The program remains highly competitive, with 1,200 applications already submitted since 1 August 2024.

Eligibility Criteria for Subclass 190 Visa Nomination

Minimum Requirements

  • Age: You must be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation.

  • Occupation list: Your occupation must be on the relevant skilled occupation list.

  • Skills assessment: You must obtain a suitable skills assessment for your nominated occupation.

  • Nomination stream: Your occupation must qualify under the following streams to be considered for a State nomination invitation.

    • Skilled Employment Pathway

      • You must work an average of at least 20 hours per week for the six months before applying.

      • You must live in Tasmania and plan to stay, with your dependents also living in Tasmania.

      • Your job should closely match your nominated occupation (within the same ANZSCO 4-digit group).

      • Your role must be genuinely needed by the business, with a valid contract of at least 12 months, and at least three months remaining when you apply.

TOSOL option Your job must be listed on the Tasmanian Onshore Skilled Employment Occupation List (TOSOL). You must have worked in Tasmania for the six months immediately before applying. Your job must average at least 20 hours per week during this six-month period.
Long-term employment option All occupations are eligible for this option if listed on the relevant Home Affairs list. You must have worked in a role related to your skills assessment for at least 15 months before applying. Your employment must meet any listed occupational caveats.

Skilled Graduate Pathway

  • You must have completed a course and received a letter of completion from a Tasmanian tertiary institution registered on CRICOS.

  • You need to have lived in Tasmania for at least two years from the start of your course and throughout your studies.

  • Your course must be AQF 5 (Diploma) or higher, or at least Certificate III, related to an ANZSCO Major Group 3 or 4 occupation, and listed on CRICOS with a duration of at least 92 weeks.

  • The course must have been completed full-time and on-site in Tasmania.

  • You must currently live in Tasmania and plan to continue living there.

Established Resident Pathway

  • You must have lived in Tasmania for at least three years, with no more than 50% of your time in Australia spent in another state or territory, and meet one of the following:

    • Be currently employed in Tasmania in a role at ANZSCO Skill Levels 1-3, with at least 12 months of work in the last 24 months (averaging 20 hours per week).

    • Be currently employed in Tasmania in a role at ANZSCO Skill Levels 4 or 5, with at least 18 months of work in the last three years (averaging 20 hours per week).

    • Have operated a business for the last two years with taxable earnings meeting the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold ($73,150).

Overseas Applicant Pathway

  • You must have a health or allied health skills assessment from the health sector job occupation list

  • You must have a formal job offer in Tasmania that is closely related to your nominated occupation.

  • Neither you nor your dependents should have lived in another Australian state or territory in the last 12 months.

  • Your employer must have an established business in Tasmania that has been operating for at least 12 months.

  • Your wages and conditions must match those of an Australian citizen or permanent resident, with salary at least equal to the local market rate.

  • There must be a genuine need for your role in the business, with the business able to support your employment.

Eligibility Criteria for Subclass 491 Visa Nomination

Minimum Requirements

  • Age: You must be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation.

  • Occupation list: Your occupation must be on the relevant skilled occupation list.

Skill Level 1-3 according to ANZSCO Your job must be listed on the Tasmanian Onshore Skilled Employment Occupation List (TOSOL). You need to have worked in Tasmania for at least six months before applying, with an average of 20 hours per week during that time. The business must have a real, ongoing need for your position, with a valid 12-month contract that has at least three months left when you apply for nomination.
Skill Level 4-5 according to ANZSCO All occupations are eligible for this option if listed on the relevant Home Affairs list. You need to have worked in Tasmania for at least 12 months before applying, averaging at least 20 hours per week during that time. Your employer must provide a statement showing a genuine, serious difficulty in filling the role, detailing the need for the position, local hiring efforts, and strategies used to try to solve the recruitment issue.

Skilled Graduate Pathway

  • You must have completed a course and received a letter of completion from a Tasmanian tertiary institution registered on CRICOS.

  • You must have lived in the state for at least one calendar year from the commencement of your course and for the duration of your studies.

  • Your course must be AQF 5 (Diploma) or higher, or at least Certificate III, related to an ANZSCO Major Group 3 or 4 occupation, and listed on CRICOS with a duration of at least 40 weeks.

  • The course must have been completed full-time and on-site in Tasmania.

  • You must currently live in Tasmania and plan to continue living there.

Established Resident Pathway

  • You must have lived in Tasmania for the last two years, with no more than 50% of your time in Australia spent in another state or territory, and meet one of the following:

    • Be currently employed in Tasmania in a role at ANZSCO Skill Levels 1-3, with at least 6 months of work in the last 12 months (averaging 20 hours per week).

    • Be currently employed in Tasmania in a role at ANZSCO Skill Levels 4 or 5, with at least 12 months of work in the last 18 months (averaging 20 hours per week).

Overseas Applicant Pathway

  • You must have a formal job offer in Tasmania that is closely related to your nominated occupation.

  • Neither you nor your dependents should have lived in another Australian state or territory in the last 12 months.

  • Your employer must have an established business in Tasmania that has been operating for at least 12 months.

  • Your wages and conditions must match those of an Australian citizen or permanent resident, with salary at least equal to the local market rate.

  • There must be a genuine need for your role in the business, with the business able to support your employment.

Business Operator Pathway

  • You must have run a business in Tasmania, either alone or with your spouse, for at least 12 months.

  • The business should provide you with a taxable income of at least 85% of the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (currently $62,178).

  • You need to complete key Fair Work Ombudsman training to show your understanding of fair employee treatment.

  • Massage therapy business owners must have a relevant skills assessment and a verified health fund provider number.

  • Subcontracting business owners are not eligible for this pathway.
