The end of a decade-long of neglect: Over 3.4 million visas processed and finalized since the 1st of June 2022

The Australian government has been clear since the beginning of the financial year 2022-2023 on their goal to cut down a huge chunk of visa backlogs and speed up visa processing. As the new administration took over, we have seen millions of people in the queue which has resulted in skill shortages across Australia.

To combat this, the Labor administration allocated a $632 million budget on offshore visa processing alone. As the new administration took over, we have seen millions of people in the queue which has resulted in skill shortages across Australia. To combat this, the Labor administration allocated a $632 million budget on offshore visa processing alone.

This new approach has been effective and has managed to bring down the number of visa backlogs to 740,000 from a colossal 4.1 million. Over 3.4 million or 80 percent of visa backlogs have been processed and finalized since the first of June 2022.

The current administration ensures that there is more work to be done to improve the current immigration system as they aim to make access for skilled migrants more efficient by:

  • Reducing the need for employers to conduct market testing

  • Increasing the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold

  • Cutting down lengthy visa processing

The path that the government is taking right now does not only enhance Austalia’s productivity but mainly assist migrants to build new and prosperous lives in Australia.

“No migrant should be permanently temporary"

Immigration Minsiter Giles noted that what the government need is “a system that attracts and retains talent, a system that is simple, efficient and complementary to the skills existing in Australia"

Guided by these goals,  Mr. Giles implemented the following changes in the system:

  • Increased the number of permanent skilled and family visas this financial year

  • Increased staff capacity by 500 people

  • Automated straightforward tasks to free up staff to work on more complex visa applications

  • Simplified the system used to prioritise applications
