New Designated Area Migration Agreement (NT DAMA III)

On 19 March 2025, the Northern Territory introduced DAMA III, effective until 30 June 2030. This agreement enables NT employers to sponsor up to 1,500 additional overseas workers annually, across an expanded list of 325 occupations. The goal is to fill critical skill shortages and drive regional development.

What is DAMA and Why Does It Matter?

The Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA) is a formal arrangement between the Australian Government and a specific regional area. Its purpose is to help regions like the Northern Territory attract skilled migrants in sectors where local labor is scarce. DAMAs offer flexibility beyond standard skilled visa programs—allowing for concessions on English language, salary, and experience requirements, making it easier for employers to find the talent they need.

What’s New in DAMA III:

  • More occupations available

  • Streamlined application process for employers

  • Continued pathway to permanent residency for eligible workers

Key Criteria for Participation:

  • Only employers can sponsor; individuals must be offered a job first.

  • Employers must prove genuine efforts to hire locally.

  • Occupation must be listed in the DAMA III agreement.

How It Works:

  • Employer applies for endorsement via the NT DAMA portal.

  • Once endorsed, the employer enters a five-year agreement with the Department of Home Affairs.

  • A job offer is extended to the overseas worker, who can then apply for a visa.

DAMA III is a key part of Australia’s broader regional migration strategy—helping areas like the NT grow sustainably by connecting them with the global workforce.
