The points test system for potential migrants seeking skilled visas to Australia is set to undergo its first major update in over a decade as part of a broader reform of the country's immigration system.

 GSM Visa Points Test Revamp

The federal government has announced plans to revise the points-based assessment for skilled migrants, which determines eligibility for entry into Australia, following a decision to reduce overall immigration levels.A report released in December evaluating Australia's migration system included recommendations to refine the points test criteria. Here are the key elements to note:

  • Focus on Employment Success: The new points test system will prioritize traits associated with migrants who are likely to succeed in securing skilled employment.

  • Clearer Guidelines: The revised system will offer clearer guidelines and assurances for prospective migrants.

  • Targeting Skill Shortages: It aims to direct attention toward sectors facing skill shortages and recognize the potential of younger individuals.

The new points test system will primarily focus on the applicant's skills, employment sector, and age.

Family Migration Stream this 2024-2025

The Australian Government has maintained the size of the family stream, recognizing its critical role in the country’s migration system. Family migration allows Australian citizens and permanent residents to reunite with their loved ones, fostering stronger social cohesion and community ties. Immigrant parents, in particular, are acknowledged for their valuable social contributions to their families and local communities.

  • Partner Visa Program

The largest component of the family stream is the Partner visa category. Since 2022–23, this program has adopted a demand-driven model.

  • Parent Visa Program

The Parent visa program remains steady at 8,500 places. This ensures that parents of Australian residents can continue to join their families and contribute to the community.

  • Other Family Visa Categories

Other Family visa categories, including the Aged Dependent Relative, Remaining Relative, and Carer programs, are maintained at 500 places. These categories provide vital support to Australian residents with specific family care needs.

  • Child Visa Program

The Child visa program allows Australian residents to sponsor their dependent or adopted children, or an orphaned relative. Although the program is demand-driven, it is set at 3,000 places for planning purposes. The Australian Government prioritises the reunification of a child with an Australian parent or family sponsor, ensuring that the best interests of the child are a primary consideration in line with international obligations.

Australia opens Pacific Engagement Visa to 3,000 Pacific Islanders

Starting June 3, 2024, Pacific Island and Timor-Leste nationals will have the opportunity to register for Australia's new Pacific Engagement Visa (PEV) program. This initiative opens doors for Pacific and Timorese nationals to live, work, and study in Australia, fostering stronger ties and mutual growth between the nations.

Under the PEV program, up to 3,000 citizens from Pacific Island countries and Timor-Leste will be able to migrate to Australia as permanent residents each year. This significant step not only enhances individual opportunities but also strengthens community bonds and cultural exchange, enriching both Australia and the participating nations.
