Motivations of International Students – GO8 Paper

The Group of Eight Australia universities have released a background paper that brings together research on the motivations of international students in choosing to live and study in Australia.

The provision of education to the international student market is Australia’s fourth largest export industry with estimates that it contributes around $15 billion dollars a year to the Australian economy.  According to the paper, Australia is the third most popular destination for international students.

The results highlight the perception of quality is the most important factor in student choice. Cost, safety, post-graduation work rights and student visa policies are all considered, but the majority of students say quality is what matters most.

Gaining a better understanding of why international students choose to live and study in Australia is vital to the future of Australia’s fourth largest export industry, estimated at contributing around $15 billion a year to the economy.

In 2010, more than 4.1 million tertiary students worldwide were enrolled outside their country of citizenship. Australia is currently the third most popular destination for international students, attracting nearly 7 per cent of the total. While that is an impressive effort for a country the size of Australia, this outcome is by no means guaranteed into the future.

This paper seeks to better understand why international students come to Australia and, specifically, whether research quality is a factor when choosing their destination. It consists of a brief summary of a range of reports and surveys from the following respected organisations: Australian Education International, IDP, ISG, World Education Services, Hobsons, I-graduate and the Economist Intelligence Unit.

The results highlight that the perception of quality is the most important factor in student choice. Cost, safety, post-graduation work rights and student visa policies are all considered but the majority of students say quality is what matters most.
