IMPORTANT: New Recommendation for Abolition of Parent Visas5 October 2016
The Australia’s Productivity Commission is trying to recommend the abolition of the permanent visa for parents of migrants, or if not, recommending boosting the fee of this visa tremendously.
The Commission reported the necessity for providing the permanent residence visa for parents in only extreme, compassionate circumstances in order to address the issue of the parents costing taxpayers $3.2 billion a year. Another way to address this issue is to recommend that the migrant children in Australia or parents are responsible for the health and welfare costs.
The current $50,000 contribution charge legislated covers a small portion of the yearly intake of about 7,200 contributory parents. Another 1,500 parents make a minimal contribution, while the cumulative costs of a parent visa holder in 2015-2016 was $335,000 and $410,000 noted News.com.au.
Although the commission acknowledges migration can be a good thing for the Australian economy and budget, but they want to ensure there are no loopholes which will allow migrants with insufficient skills and English language to gain permanent residency.
As a result of this assistance currently in place, needed by 8,700 parents over their lifetime would be between $2.6 billion and $3.2 billion.
