Call for Engineers – Australia needs you

20 January 2016

If you are an engineer look no further, you are at an advantage if you want to migrate to Australia. It can be evidenced by the large variety of specializations included in the Skilled Occupations List (SOL). Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) has introduced a number of laws and regulations to benefit engineers who wish to migrate to the country.
English Language Testing
Before 01 January 2016, IELTS English language test was the only acceptable evidence. Since then the skills assessment authority, Engineers Australia (EA), can also opt for TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Test) for skills assessment application.
The other benefit is towards an Australian student visa holders who has pursued an undergraduate engineering qualification, or a 2-year master program, or PhD program, from a recognised Australian educational provider, will be exempt from EA’s English language ability testing requirement.
Masters Qualifications/Accreditations
Generally speaking, you need to have an accredited bachelor degree so as to be able to bypass the Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) process. Engineers Australia has now accredited certain Masters qualifications in Australia for CDR exemption.
This means that if you have an undergrad degree from an overseas educational institution, you can use your Australian master’s qualification to apply for skills assessment, without the need to fulfil CDR requirements. Some advanced diplomas, as assessed by Engineers Australia, are also recognized for CDR exemption purposes.
Priority-based Services
EA has introduced a Priority-based Services, which offers a 5-day turnaround period, comparing to the usual turnaround period of 13 weeks, in order to benefit certain types of engineers and employers.
